Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Dr. Barragan froze, the syringe trembling slightly in his grip. His face drained of all color, turning a sickening shade of gray. "What... what nonsense is this? She’s a domestic caregiver. She doesn't know what she's talking about."

"Mariana," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying, murderous calm. "Step away from the bed. Now."

"Check his bag," I shouted, looking directly at Harrison Cole and David Sterling. "In the side pocket of Dr. Barragan’s leather satchel, there are three ampoules of Vecuronium bromide with the commercial labels scratched off. He’s been dosing Grant twice daily for nine weeks to simulate end-stage ALS! Grant isn't comatose—he is chemically imprisoned!"

Harrison Cole gasped, stepping back from the table. "Julian... what is she talking about?"

"She’s insane!" Julian roared, lunging forward and grabbing my upper arm with bruising force. "She’s a broke, thieving little parasite trying to invent a lawsuit before I kick her out on the street! Marcus! Get in here! Drag this bitch out of my house!"

The double doors burst open. Marcus marched into the room, his hand already moving toward the concealed Glock beneath his jacket.

"Take her down to the wine cellar," Julian commanded, his eyes bloodshot, completely unhinged now that his prize was within reach. "Lock her in. Take the bastard kid and leave him on the driveway. I'll deal with both of them once the board documents are filed."

"Julian, stop this!" David Sterling yelled, horrified. "This is madness! We need to call the police—"

"Nobody calls anyone!" Julian screamed, turning on his own family members like a rabid dog. "I run this family! I built this empire while Grant rotted in his grief! You think I’m going to let some minimum-wage babysitter ruin ten years of planning? Ruben, push that plunger right now or you won't live to spend a single dime of that Cyprus escrow!"

Barragan, sweating profusely, raised the syringe to the port.

Marcus grabbed my hair, yanking my head back. Leo woke up and began to wail at the top of his lungs, his small cries cutting through the violent shouting in the room.

"Let her go," a voice said.

The voice was not loud.

It did not need to be.

It possessed the terrifying, immovable mass of an avalanche grinding down a mountainside.

Every person in the room froze.

Marcus stopped. Julian stopped. Dr. Barragan’s hands began to shake so violently the syringe rattled against the plastic IV valve.

Slowly, deliberately, the man in the bed sat up.

Grant Sterling swung his long legs over the side of the mattress. His bare feet hit the polished hardwood floor with a solid, resonant thud. He stood up—six feet two inches of lean, unyielding fury—towering over his nephew, over the doctor, over the terrified board members.

His hazel eyes burned with the light of a man who had walked through the gates of hell and returned with fire in his fists.

"Uncle... Grant?" Julian whispered, his face slackening, his knees visibly buckling as he stumbled backward until his spine hit the mahogany mantelpiece. "You... you can't... you're—"

May you like

"I am awake, Julian," Grant said, his voice rolling through the chamber like distant thunder. "And every word you have spoken for the last sixty days has been recorded."
