Chapter 6 - The Audit and the Freezes

Daniel’s face contorted into an expression of raw, unadulterated hatred. He stepped into the office, his fists clenched, but stopped short when he noticed Marcus sitting calmly at the side desk with a voice recorder resting next to his laptop.

“You’re recording this?” Daniel spat, pointing an accusing finger at Marcus. “Get the hell out of my house, Marcus! You work for me!”

“Marcus works for Vanguard Pacific, Daniel,” I corrected him. “Which means he works for me. And every room in this house is wired with audio-visual monitoring. If you take one step closer to this desk, I won't hesitate to have the police return and add a domestic harassment charge to your record.”

Daniel paused, the bravado draining from his posture, replaced by a frantic, sweating desperation. He dropped into the armchair across from my desk, burying his face in his hands.

“Claire… please,” he groaned, his voice muffled by his fingers. “Why are you doing this? We’re married. We took vows. For better or for worse. If I made some mistakes with the accounting, it was only because Mom was drowning in debt after Dad died! You have so much money, Claire! You make more in a quarter than my entire family makes in five years! What was I supposed to do? Let my mother lose her dignity? Let Brittany fail before she even got started?”

“Your mother didn't lose her dignity, Daniel. She never had any,” I said, looking at him with utter detachment. “And you didn't 'make mistakes with the accounting.' You committed systematic, calculated felony embezzlement. You stole from the woman who paid off your debts, who bought you clothes, who put a roof over your head, and who cooked an eighteen-pound roast for your family while you stood by and let your mother slap me.”

“She was emotional!” Daniel yelled, looking up with red-rimmed eyes. “You threw the meat in the trash! You know how Mom gets when she feels disrespected!”

“I was disrespected for three years, Daniel,” I said. “Every single Sunday dinner where Patricia told me I was half a woman because I hadn't given her grandchildren. Every single holiday where Brittany demanded expensive gifts and never once said thank you. Every single night you came home late, claiming you were closing deals for my company, when you were actually sitting in luxury lounges charging five-hundred-dollar champagne tabs to my corporate cards.”

I turned my screen toward him.

The screen showed the real-time activity log for Vanguard’s financial portal.

One by one, the red notifications flashed:

*CREDIT LINE TERMINATED: DANIEL VANCE (AMEX PLATINUM #4012)*

*CREDIT LINE TERMINATED: DANIEL VANCE (VISA SIGNATURE #8831)*

*VEHICLE LEASE REVOKED: BMW M5 (VIN #...9042) - REPOSSESSION DISPATCHED*

*ACCESS REVOKED: VANGUARD PACIFIC ASSET REPOSITORIES*

“The repossession tow truck will arrive for your car at noon tomorrow,” I informed him. “The lease is held under Vanguard Pacific. You are no longer an authorized operator. You may take your personal effects from the trunk, provided they were not purchased with company funds.”

Daniel stared at the flashing red lines, his jaw trembling.

“You’re stripping me of everything,” he whispered.

“No, Daniel,” I said, closing my laptop with a definitive *snap*. “I’m merely returning you to the exact financial condition you were in the day I met you. A man with sixty thousand dollars in debt, no career prospects, and an overinflated ego propped up by a delusion.”

His phone began to vibrate violently on the leather chair cushion.

Daniel looked down. The caller ID flashed: *BRITTANY*.

He answered on speaker, his voice cracking. “Brittany? Where are you?”

A hysterical wail exploded from the phone’s speaker, so loud that Marcus had to adjust the volume settings on his recorder.

“Daniel! Help me!” Brittany screamed through gasping sobs. “The police came to the club! They seized both chafing dishes! They said the meat was evidence in a grand theft investigation! All of my friends saw it! Chloe’s mother recorded the whole thing on TikTok! And now there’s a tow truck hooking up my Lexus! They’re towing my car, Daniel! Tell Claire to stop this! Tell her to call them off right now!”

Daniel looked at me, his eyes pleading, terrified, broken.

I reached across the desk, took the phone from his limp fingers, brought it to my lips, and spoke clearly into the microphone.

“The Lexus has been repossessed, Brittany. And you have twelve hours to clear your illegal catering equipment out of Mercer Crossing Suite 104 before the county health department condemns the inventory.”

“Claire?! You bitch! You ruined my life! I had three clients lined up for next month!”

“Get a job, Brittany,” I said calmly.

Then I ended the call and tossed the phone back onto the desk.
