Chapter 5 - The Glass Tower

On Monday morning at eight-thirty, Daniel drove his leased BMW M8 to the financial district. He hadn't slept. Vanessa had spent the entire night berating him, demanding that he call his father, demanding that he fix the internet mockery, demanding that he pay the bill.

Daniel had refused to call me. His pride was too thick. Instead, he convinced himself that his digital marketing and logistics firm, *Apex Zenith*, would pull him through. He had just signed two regional clients. If he could secure an emergency business bridge loan from the bank, he could cover the Hawthorne Hall bill and bury the scandal.

He parked in his reserved executive spot in the underground garage of the Meridian Commerce Tower—a gleaming forty-story skyscraper of black glass and polished steel in the center of the city.

Daniel loved this building. He loved bringing prospective clients to the fourteenth floor. He loved walking past the security desk, basking in the prestigious address: *One Meridian Plaza*. It made his tiny five-person company look like a multi-million-dollar empire.

He rode the elevator up to fourteen, stepped off into the marble corridor, and walked toward his double glass doors.

He pulled his keycard from his wallet and swiped it against the electronic scanner.

*Beep. Red flash.*

Daniel frowned. He swiped it again.

*Beep. Red flash.*

He pushed the door handle. It was locked tight.

Before he could pull out his master key, the heavy fire door at the end of the hall opened. Two uniformed security guards and a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped into the hallway.

Daniel recognized the man in the suit immediately. It was Walter Hayes—the formidable corporate attorney who had represented the city’s top commercial developers for decades.

“Daniel,” Walter said, his voice clipped and dry.

“Walter? What’s going on?” Daniel asked, gesturing at the locked door. “My keycard isn't working. I’ve got a nine-thirty pitch with a regional freight client.”

Walter opened a leather folio and pulled out a certified document.

“Apex Zenith has been served with a formal Notice of Immediate Lease Termination and Commercial Eviction,” Walter announced smoothly.

Daniel blinked, stunned. “What? Eviction? I’m on a subsidized corporate lease! My dad worked that out with the building management two years ago!”

“Your father *subsidized* that lease,” Walter corrected, peering over his reading glasses. “Vance Meridian Holdings owns the Meridian Commerce Tower. For the past twenty-four months, your father’s holding company paid ninety percent of your market rent as an off-the-books family gift. You were paying eight hundred dollars a month for prime Class-A commercial space that rents for fourteen thousand.”

Daniel’s jaw went completely slack. “My dad... owns this building?”

“Vance Meridian Holdings owns this building, along with twelve others in the metropolitan area,” Walter said calmly. “And as of midnight yesterday, the subsidy was formally revoked. Furthermore, according to Section 14 of your commercial lease agreement, failure to pay full market rent allows the landlord to seize the premises and place an immediate commercial lien on all business assets within the suite until back-subsidies are audited.”

“Back-subsidies?” Daniel gasped, his voice trembling. “What back-subsidies?”

Walter handed him the document.

“Your father never formally gifted the subsidies, Daniel. He carried them on the corporate ledger as deferred loans, contingent upon your company maintaining ethical compliance and family honor codes. The total outstanding deferred balance is three hundred and twelve thousand dollars.”

Daniel leaned against the cold glass wall of his office, his knees threatening to buckle.

“He... he’s bluffing,” Daniel stammered, panic finally cracking through his arrogance. “He’s doing this to scare me because of the wedding! He wouldn't destroy my company!”

“Your father does not bluff, Daniel,” Walter said, closing the folio with a soft, final snap. “You have forty-eight hours to have an independent bonded courier collect your personal effects under security supervision. If you attempt to enter this suite unauthorized, you will be arrested for commercial trespassing.”

Walter turned to the security guards. “Escort Mr. Vance off the premises.”
