Chapter 6 - Tracing the Alchemist

At two in the morning, while Julian’s measured breathing filled the master bedroom, Morgan slipped out of bed. She moved like a phantom across the hardwood, carrying her mobile phone and a miniature flash drive she had kept hidden inside the hollow bottom of a cosmetic jar.

Sitting in the guest bathroom with the exhaust fan humming to muffle any sound, she examined the partial network log she had managed to copy from Julian’s proxy connection. *Alchemist_99* had not operated with total impunity; the server had pinged an unlisted relay station routed through an IP address registered to an industrial zoning sector along the city’s northern shipping canals.

Morgan cross-referenced the geographic coordinates with municipal water and commercial property registries she frequently utilized for corporate tax audits. One listing stood out: *Vanguard Botanical Synthesis*, a defunct agrochemical supplier whose business license had lapsed six months ago, yet whose commercial power consumption remained unusually elevated.

The property was registered to a shell company: *Aethelgard Holdings*.

Morgan felt the cold dread pooling in her stomach. Aethelgard was not a name Julian had ever mentioned, but she recognized the font on the corporate filing documents uploaded to the county clerk’s portal. The signature at the bottom belonged to a notary named Arthur Vance—the exact same notary who had stamped Julian’s updated supplemental term life insurance policies three weeks prior.

Julian hadn't just bought a poison from a dark-web vendor. He had invested in the production facility. He was an active partner in whatever toxic enterprise was operating behind the rusted corrugated walls of Vanguard Botanical.

Her phone vibrated in her hand, startling her so violently she almost dropped it into the sink.

It was a text message from an unknown number. There was no greeting, no preamble, only three sentences:

*He asked you for the necklace tonight, didn't he? Do not sleep under the same roof if you value your breath. Meet me where the yellow bus turns around at dawn.*

Morgan stared at the screen, her thumbs trembling as she typed back: *Who are you?*

May you like

The reply was instantaneous: *The woman whose daughter wore his sapphire four years ago.*
