Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

The mahogany-paneled conference room of Vance & Associates smelled of fresh dark roast coffee and legal parchment. Marcus Vance, a sharp-featured man with graying temples, stared at his laptop screen where the 4K surveillance footage was playing. When the audio of Daniela’s skull striking the wood rang through the high-end speakers, Marcus closed his eyes and let out a slow, ragged breath.
"Jesus Christ, Javier," Marcus whispered, opening his eyes and looking across the table at me. "That’s not just neglect. That’s felony child abuse, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument depending on how the DA frames the furniture edge, and reckless endangerment."
"I don't just want her arrested, Marcus," I said, sliding the manila folders across the table. "I want her completely extracted from our lives. Look at the financial forensics."
Marcus spent the next forty-five minutes reviewing the printouts: the predatory loans taken out using Daniela’s Social Security number, the drained college tuition accounts, the altered insurance documentation, and the text exchanges with the loan shark known as 'V.'
"Her legal defense will claim an extreme addiction defense or postpartum psychosis that never healed," Marcus said, tapping his gold pen against the legal pad. "We aren't going to give her that runway. Here is how we play this: at 8:00 AM, I am filing an ex parte emergency petition for an order of protection barring Patricia from coming within one thousand feet of you or Daniela. Simultaneously, I’m filing an emergency freeze on all joint financial accounts and a petition for absolute divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty and marital waste."
"What about the car?" I asked. "The loan shark is expecting the vehicle this morning."
Marcus grinned, though there was zero humor in his eyes. "That is where Detective Miller comes in. Miller is lead investigator with Phoenix PD’s financial crimes division; he’s also a personal friend. If your wife drives that car to that scrap yard to exchange it for cash, she isn't just committing auto theft—she’s engaging in a criminal conspiracy involving stolen property and unregistered lending. We let her dig her own grave."
"And Daniela?"
"Your daughter is safe at Banner Health. I've already called their chief administrator; Daniela is officially marked as a confidential patient. No visitors without your explicit, written biometric approval. If Patricia shows up at that hospital, security will detain her immediately."
I stood up from the conference table, feeling the weight of the last twenty-four hours crushing my spine. "I have to go back to the house."
"Why?" Marcus frowned, stepping around the table. "Javier, let the police handle it."

"If I'm not home when she wakes up, she’ll know something is broken," I replied coldly. "She expects me to be the bewildered, overworked husband who buys her excuses. If she smells a trap, she’ll run, destroy her phone, or hide the records. I need her confident. I need her walking straight into the net."
