Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Well

The boardroom descended into suffocating silence.
Julian took a half-step toward the side exit, but one of the US Marshals stepped directly into his path, resting a heavy hand on his holstered firearm. "Stay where you are, sir."
"This is an outrage!" Eleanor hissed, her voice finally losing its aristocratic control, pitching upward into an ugly, venomous shriek. "Charles was demented when he signed those papers! He was on high doses of fentanyl! I am his widow! I have the right to inspect those documents before any federal agency touches them!"
"You'll have plenty of time to inspect them during discovery, Mrs. Vance," Arthur replied smoothly, pulling a crisp white document from his leather briefcase and sliding it across the polished marble. "This is an emergency preservation order signed by Federal Judge Holbrooke at six-thirty this morning. Every server, every backup hard drive, and every communication log between you, Julian, Richard, and the Zurich equity partners from the last twelve months is officially property of the United States Department of Justice."
Before Eleanor could scream again, my phone vibrated in my hand.
I looked at the screen. It was Detective Miller from the NYPD Special Victims and Major Case Squad.
I stepped away from the table, answering the call and putting it on speakerphone.
"Detective," I said, my voice echoing across the silent boardroom. "Are you with the forensic team?"
"I’m at your house in Oakridge right now, Mr. Vance," Miller’s gravelly voice projected loudly through the speaker. Everyone at the table—the board members, Richard, Julian, and Eleanor—froze. "We executed the search warrant on the property twenty minutes ago. We bagged the dining room table, the Meissen china, and the contents of the waste disposal."
"And the fish broth?" I asked, looking directly into my mother's wide, horrified eyes.
"We ran an immediate field mass-spectrometry on the residue left in the tureen and on the bone fragments recovered from the floor," Miller said, pausing as papers rustled on his end. "It wasn't just carp bones, Mr. Vance."
A collective gasp rippled through the minority board members.
"What was in it, Detective?" I asked.
"Concentrated ergotamine tartrate and high-grade pennyroyal extract," Miller said coldly. "Uterine stimulants. In those concentrations, it acts as a chemical abortifacient designed to induce catastrophic placental abruption within two hours of ingestion. If the mechanical choking didn't kill the child, the chemical toxicity would have caused a massive internal hemorrhage, terminating the pregnancy and likely killing the mother from disseminated intravascular coagulation."
Richard sank back into his chair as if he had been shot. Marcus Kane, the head of legal, silently packed his briefcase, closed it, and stepped away from the table, completely dissociating himself from Eleanor.
"We also recovered the domestic surveillance hub from your mother's personal suite," Miller added. "Someone tried to wipe the flash drive at three in the morning, but they didn't know the smart-home system mirrors encrypted audio to an off-site cloud server. We have sixty minutes of crystal-clear audio from that dining room, Mr. Vance. We have your mother ordering Julian to pin your wife down. We have your mother explicitly telling Hannah that she would never live to see week thirty-five."
The phone clicked.
Eleanor looked up at me. The pristine, untouchable matriarch was gone. Her chest was heaving, her perfectly styled hair falling in jagged wisps across her forehead, her eyes wild, cornered, and venomous.
"You think you've won, Logan?" she whispered, her hands shaking violently against the tabletop. "You think you can drag me down? I built this family! Without me, you are nothing! You're the pathetic, weak-willed son of a dying man who couldn't even control his own company!"
"Detective Miller is already on his way here with four squad cars, Mother," I said, putting my phone back into my pocket. "And as the legally recognized proxy for Charles Vance's sixty percent controlling share, I am officially terminating Richard Vance, Julian Vance, and Eleanor Vance from all corporate positions, effective this very second."

I turned to the US Marshals. "Escort them to the lobby. If they try to delete so much as an email from their phones, cuff them."
