Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary

The celebration lasted until two in the morning, but Adrian whisked Claire away long before the final bottles of Amarone were emptied.
They stood together on the fourth-floor master balcony, looking out over the Long Island Sound. The nor'easter had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cloudless autumn night. The water below was calm, reflecting a million glittering stars, and the salt air was sweet with the scent of fallen pine needles.
Adrian stood behind Claire, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. His chin rested on her shoulder, his warm breath stirring the hair at her temple.
She was not shivering tonight. The heavy cashmere coat draped over her shoulders, combined with the heat of his body, kept the midnight chill entirely at bay.
“Are you cold?” he asked softly.
“No,” she whispered, leaning back into his strength. Her head rested against his broad chest, right over the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. “For the first time in my life, Adrian... I’m not cold at all.”
He turned her around in his arms, his large hands settling onto the curve of her hips. He looked down at her face, tracing the soft line of her cheek, the full curve of her lips, and the deep, luminous blue of her eyes.
“You spent thirty years thinking you were too much for the world, Claire,” he murmured, his voice thick with an emotion he had never permitted himself to feel before. “Too loud, too soft, too much space.”
He stepped closer, pressing his hips into hers, making her gasp at the hard, unyielding proof of his desire.
“You are not too much for me,” he whispered against her lips. “You are the only thing that has ever been enough.”
Claire reached up, her small, soft hands sliding around his neck, burying her fingers in his thick dark hair. She pulled him down to her, closing the final inch between them.
The kiss was not polite. It was not hesitant.
It was a fierce, claiming storm—Adrian tasted of dark wine, smoke, and an all-consuming possessiveness that made Claire’s soul ache with relief. He lifted her easily, setting her onto the wide stone railing of the balcony, his hands cupping the fullness of her thighs as he pulled her legs around his waist.
Claire clung to him, opening her mouth to his, matching his hunger with a desperate, wild passion she had spent a lifetime repressing. She felt the heavy silk of her gown bunching, the cold night air touching her skin, and the scorching heat of his hands branding her everywhere he touched.
When he finally broke the kiss, both of them were breathing raggedly, their foreheads pressed together in the starlight.
“No more sleeping on marble floors, little bird,” Adrian whispered, his eyes fierce and bright in the darkness.
Claire smiled, a real, radiant smile that transformed her face into something breathtakingly beautiful.
“Never again, Adrian.”
He lifted her from the railing, carrying her through the tall French doors, past the threshold where she had once bled inside from cold and shame, and into the master bedroom.
He kicked the heavy mahogany doors shut behind them, turning the double brass deadbolt with a solid, final click.
Outside, the twenty armed men patrolled the perimeter. The cameras swept the high stone walls. The empire hummed with violence, money, and power.
But inside the room, on the great bed behind the steel door, the sovereign had laid down his weapons.

The empire had found its master.
And the master had finally found his home.
