Chapter 4 - False Security

At noon, the sun shone brightly over Alaric Vance’s sprawling estate in the gated enclave of Forest Creek. The private driveway was framed by blooming dogwoods and manicured boxwoods.

On the back patio, the imported Italian travertine stones gleamed under a fresh coat of sealant. The commercial pressure-washing crew had finished their work at sunrise, washing away every drop of my blood for twelve hundred dollars.

My mother, Morwenna, sat at the wrought-iron patio table wearing oversized designer sunglasses, slicing into an artisan pastry. Across from her, Cressida admired her French manicure, her $4,500 leather handbag sitting prominently atop the glass table like a championship trophy.

"Balthazar says the signing ceremony for the defense contract will be finalized by Friday," Cressida announced, waving her iced latte. "Eight-point-five million. We're putting a deposit on the summer home in Bald Head Island next week."

Alaric stepped out through the French doors, checking his gold Rolex. "That is how a real Vance conducts business. Not like your sister, wallowing in cheap apartments, typing bibliographies for pocket change."

Morwenna sneered, dabbing a crumb from her lip. "I still cannot believe she dared grab Draven. The audacity of that girl. After everything we sacrifice to invite her into polite society."

"Well, she won't be returning," Alaric said firmly. "I spoke with our estate planner this morning. Her name is completely excised from the family trust. She gets nothing. Not a single teaspoon of silver."

Cressida laughed, tapping the polished brass corner of her handbag against the table. "She couldn't afford a real lawyer anyway. And Balthazar made sure his friend Gannon handled the initial report. By the time Vesper stops crying, the narrative will be set in stone: she arrived drunk, threw a tantrum over an old medal, tripped, and struck her head on the barbecue ledge."

"A tragic accident," Morwenna agreed with a cruel, satisfied smile. "If she tries to cause trouble, Balthazar will ruin her credit rating permanently."

The heavy wrought-iron security gate at the front of the estate let out a sharp electronic chime.

Alaric frowned, glancing toward the courtyard. "Are you expecting deliveries, Cressida?"

"No," she replied, checking her phone. "Balthazar was coming back from his logistics office to celebrate lunch with us. Maybe he brought the champagne early."

A low rumble echoed down the tree-lined driveway. It was not the smooth purr of Balthazar's leased Range Rover.

It sounded like heavy diesel engines moving in strict, disciplined formation.

Cressida stood up, her brow furrowing as she adjusted her designer sunglasses. "What on earth is that noise?"

Alaric straightened his polo shirt, walking toward the stone archway that led to the front motor court. "Some delivery truck driver must have lost his way past the guard shack. I'll have the security company fire the gatekeeper for this."

He rounded the corner of the brick garage, expecting an errant freight van.

Instead, his breath caught in his throat.
