Chapter 4 - The Shadow on the Concourse

The red emergency strobe lights cut through the lower baggage claim in dizzying pulses. Commuters shouted in confusion, ducking instinctively as airport security personnel scrambled to decipher whether the alarm was a drill or a breach.
I didn't stop to explain. I ran, my heels clicking frantically against the polished terrazzo floor, my breath tearing ragged through my lungs.
Every shadow seemed to stretch into the silhouette of a hitman; every man in a dark overcoat made my blood run ice-cold. Dante had claimed the Bratva wanted me three years ago, but if Victoria knew I was back, she wouldn't hesitate to finish what she started. Victoria had always coveted everything that belonged to me—my father's affection, the family trust, and ultimately, Dante Moretti. If she discovered I had returned with Dante's rightful heir, she would slaughter us both before we could claim a single dime or disrupt her status as the Don's wife.
"Clara!" I gasped, rounding the corner near Carousel 4.
Tucked between an oversized pillar and an out-of-order vending machine stood Clara, her arms wrapped protectively around a small figure bundled in a navy wool coat.
"Mama!" Leo's sweet, piping voice cut through the chaos like a beacon of pure light. He held up his little wooden train, his cheeks flushed pink from the cold draft blowing in from the automated doors. "Train go choo-choo!"
"Oh, thank God," I choked out, dropping to my knees and pulling him fiercely against my chest. His small arms looped around my neck, smelling of baby shampoo and butter biscuits. My heart hammered against his tiny ribs.
"Elena, what is happening?" Clara asked, her eyes wide behind her wire-rimmed glasses. "The sirens—men in black suits were moving through the perimeter five minutes ago."
"We have to leave. Now," I said, lifting Leo onto my hip and grabbing our carry-on bags. "The car I booked—is the driver still waiting at Door 3B?"
"He texted two minutes ago saying the traffic is locked down by police, but he’s idling across the median," Clara said, adjusting her scarf with trembling hands.
"Keep your head down," I commanded, pulling the hood of Leo’s coat over his dark, thick hair. If anyone looked closely at his face, they would see the high cheekbones, the aristocratic nose, and those chilling, silver-threaded eyes that were identical to the man who ruled this city.
We hurried toward the automatic sliding doors, the freezing November wind biting into my skin the instant the glass parted. The gray Chicago sky was spitting sleet, the air smelling of jet fuel and exhaust.
Across the three lanes of idling vehicles, a black Lincoln town car had its hazard lights blinking.
"There," I said, quickening my pace.
Just as my foot touched the crosswalk, a heavy black SUV with tinted windows screeched to a halt twenty yards ahead, cutting off the pedestrian flow. Two men in charcoal coats stepped out, their hands buried inside their pockets in the unmistakable posture of men resting their fingers on holstered firearms.
One of them pressed an earpiece and scanned the crowd, his gaze locking onto my white coat.
"Elena Carter," he muttered into his collar.
"Run, Clara!" I shoved Clara forward toward the Lincoln just as a hand clamped down on my shoulder from behind.
I spun, ready to gouge out eyes with my keys, but the face that met mine didn't belong to the Bratva.
It was Luca—Dante’s underboss.
"Car's this way, Miss Elena," Luca said, his voice entirely calm despite the chaos unfolding around us. Behind him, two Moretti soldiers stepped into the sleet, their coats parting just enough to reveal submachine guns pointed directly at the two men from the SUV.
The SUV men froze, recognizing the Moretti crest pinned to Luca’s lapel, and slowly raised their hands in a silent retreat.
"Get away from me, Luca," I breathed, clutching Leo tighter.
Luca didn't look at me. His gaze dropped slowly, deliberately, down to the small boy clutching my neck. His weathered face went pale, his stoic mafia composure cracking into sheer disbelief.

"Jesus Christ," Luca whispered.
