Chapter 7 - The Main Salon

The interior of the *Sovereign* was cooled to an immaculate sixty-eight degrees. Classical piano music played softly from the integrated Bowers & Wilkins sound system. In the center of the grand salon, Pierre Marchand stood beside a circular glass table, upon which sat a chilling bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon and four crystal flutes.
Beside the table, Captain Evans stood at rigid attention in his dress whites, medals gleaming on his chest.
“Welcome aboard the *Sovereign*,” Pierre said smoothly in his polished French accent.
My father immediately walked toward the center of the room, running an appraising hand along the edge of a hand-carved Macassar ebony credenza. “Magnificent. Absolutely magnificent. Brooke, sweetheart, you’ve outdone yourself. This makes the yachts at the Palm Beach club look like rowboats.”
“I told you, Dad,” Brooke said, snapping photos of the ceiling details. “Vision. That’s all it takes.” She turned to Pierre, her tone brisk and authoritative. “Monsieur Marchand, I presume? We are on a tight schedule. My VIP clients will be landing by helicopter at 6:00 PM. I want to inspect the master suite, the bridge deck, and verify that the Grand Prix hospitality lanyards are signed off.”
“Naturally,” Pierre said without moving an inch. “However, before we proceed to the quarters, there is a minor contractual technicality that requires clarification.”
Brooke’s hand froze slightly on her phone. “What technicality? We signed the broker agreement.”
“Yes,” Pierre said, picking up a heavy leather binder from the table. “You signed an option agreement backed by a promissory note from Ward Commercial Holdings in Florida. However, thirty minutes ago, our financial compliance desk conducted the mandatory pre-boarding liquidity audit.”
My father chuckled heartily, waving his unlit cigar. “Come now, Monsieur. Ward Commercial is a rock-solid institution. I founded it thirty years ago. My signature is gold.”
“Your signature,” Pierre replied calmly, “was pledged against properties currently encumbered by two secondary mortgages with First Heritage Bank of Tampa. The liquidity verification failed at noon today. Under Section 14 of the Monaco Charter Code, your option to lease this vessel has been voided for non-performance.”

The silence that fell over the salon was instant, absolute, and suffocating.
