Chapter 7 - The Legal Guillotine

The preliminary hearing for temporary custody and asset freeze was scheduled three weeks later at the County Superior Court.
Daniel had managed to scrape together enough cash by pawning his luxury watches to hire a cut-rate defense attorney named Craig Snyder. Snyder was known for aggressive smear campaigns, and Daniel had fed him a steady diet of fabrications.
Sitting at the defense table in a suit that was visibly loose from three weeks of stress-induced weight loss, Daniel glared across the aisle.
Charlotte sat at the plaintiff’s table flanked by Arthur Vance and three top family-law litigators. She wore a midnight-blue dress, listening attentively to her counsel, entirely unbothered by Daniel’s burning gaze.
Judge Evelyn Harrison, a no-nonsense jurist known for her strict adherence to evidence, took the bench and slammed her gavel.
“We are here to resolve the emergency motion for temporary sole custody of Lily Sterling, as well as the preservation of marital assets in *Sterling v. Whitmore*,” Judge Harrison stated. “Mr. Snyder, you may present your client’s objections.”
Snyder stood up, puffing out his chest.
“Your Honor, this is an egregious case of parental alienation orchestrated by an ultra-wealthy family! For six years, my client, Mr. Daniel Sterling, was the sole provider for his household. The plaintiff, Charlotte, suffered from severe mental instability, living under an assumed persona, hiding her true identity, and abandoning her marital duties! The incident at the birthday party was nothing more than an unfortunate domestic prank taken out of context! Mr. Sterling is a pillar of the community who has been unlawfully evicted from his own home!”
Judge Harrison looked over her glasses. “An unfortunate domestic prank, Mr. Snyder? Let us review Exhibit A.”
Arthur Vance stepped forward and pressed a button on the courtroom podium.
The large projection screen on the wall flickered to life.
The footage was crystal-clear, captured in 4K resolution from the security equipment Walter’s team had installed. The courtroom watched in dead silence as Daniel grabbed Charlotte by the hair, violently smashed her face into the cake, and laughed while Lily screamed in terror.
The audio captured every word: *“Know your place, you worthless woman!”* followed by Patricia’s toast: *“Perhaps now she’ll remember who pays for everything.”*
Daniel shrank into his chair as the audio echoed off the high mahogany walls. Snyder cleared his throat nervously, looking down at his notes.
“Furthermore, Your Honor,” Vance announced, submitting a thick stack of binders to the bailiff. “Exhibit B contains forensic accounting documents recovered from Sterling Logistics’ offshore holdings. While Mr. Sterling claimed he was the ‘sole provider,’ the funds used to purchase his corporate vehicles, his residential mortgages, and his mother’s personal allowances were derived entirely from vendor loans issued by Whitmore subsidiaries under an affirmative action program for small enterprises. Mr. Sterling did not build a business. He systematically looted credit lines that were guaranteed by Walter Whitmore’s trusts.”
Judge Harrison skimmed through the financial records, her expression darkening with every page.
“Mr. Snyder,” the judge said, her voice sharp as an ice pick. “Does your client deny the authenticity of this video footage?”
“Uh... Your Honor, my client was under the influence of—”
“Does he deny it?”
“No, Your Honor,” Snyder mumbled.
Judge Harrison slammed her gavel down with such force that Patricia, sitting in the gallery, leaped out of her seat.
“The court finds that Mr. Daniel Sterling poses an immediate physical and emotional danger to the minor child. Temporary sole legal and physical custody of Lily Sterling is granted exclusively to Charlotte Whitmore. A permanent restraining order is hereby enacted. Mr. Sterling’s visitation rights are suspended indefinitely.”
Daniel shot out of his chair. “You can’t do this! She’s my daughter! Charlotte, you bitch!”
“Bailiff, take Mr. Sterling into custody for contempt of court!” Judge Harrison barked.

Two armed deputies seized Daniel by the shoulders, forcing him into handcuffs right in front of the entire gallery. As Daniel was dragged toward the holding cells, screaming obscenities, Charlotte calmly stood up, gathered her documents, and walked out of the courtroom without looking back once.
