Chapter 8 - The Velvet Guillotine

The night of the Luminary Gala, the St. Jude Grand Hotel was transformed into a monument to vanity.

A red carpet stretched from the circular driveway into the grand foyer, flanked by banks of flashing cameras and television reporters. The city's elite arrived in a river of black tie and haute couture: district attorneys, corporate titans, socialites, and fashion editors.

Marcus and I arrived at 7:30 PM. I wore an emerald-cut sapphire gown of midnight-blue velvet, designed with long, flowing sleeves and an asymmetrical neckline that concealed the compression dressings beneath. My cast had been replaced that morning with a slim, carbon-fiber walking brace. I leaned lightly on a polished ebony cane with a silver handle—not a medical crutch, but a deliberate statement of elegance and defiance.

The moment we stepped into the ballroom, the air shifted. Whispers rippled through the nearest tables.

"Is that Clara?"

"I thought she was in an institution..."

"Look at her... she doesn't look unstable at all."

Eleanor Vance saw us immediately. She stood near the VIP dais, wearing a glittering gold lamé gown, holding court with the president of the state bar association. When our eyes met, a flicker of irritation crossed her face, quickly masked by her practiced, predatory smile.

She excused herself and strode toward us, Arthur trailing behind her with a scotch in hand.

"You're late," Eleanor hissed beneath her breath as she reached us, her smile frozen in place for the roaming photographers. "And what is that ridiculous cane? I told you to look normal."

"Good evening, Mother," I said calmly. "You look radiant."

"Listen to me, you insolent girl," she murmured, leaning close, her perfume cloying and suffocating. "When the presentation begins, you will sit at Table 4 in the back. When I am handed the Luminary Trophy, I will announce our family's 'journey of healing.' You will walk to the stage, hand me the white roses, and kiss my cheek. You will smile for *Vogue* and the *Chronicle*. If you hesitate for three seconds, Arthur’s call to the licensing board goes through tomorrow morning at nine. Am I clear?"

"Perfectly clear," I replied, meeting her gaze without flinching. "I can't wait to hear your speech."

Arthur grunted, looking at Marcus with open disdain. "Keep your wife in line, Miller. Tonight is about legacy."

"Oh, Arthur," Marcus said with a chillingly polite smile. "Tonight will be remembered for decades."

Eleanor scoffed and swept away, heading toward the backstage holding area where Oilia was waiting, dressed like a princess in blush pink tulle, rehearsing her introduction.

At the side of the room, near the master AV production booth, a figure in a tailored tuxedo caught my eye. Thaddius stood beside the lead video technician. He gave me a brief, nearly imperceptible tap of his lapel pin.

The stage was set. The guillotine was raised.
