Chapter 8 - The Escape Plan

That night, Graham locked our bedroom door from the inside and placed the key in his trouser pocket. He thought he had pacified me, but his paranoia was an iron cage.

He fell asleep with his arm locked around my waist once more.

I waited until 3:00 AM.

Carefully, using techniques I had learned over hours of holding my breath in tension, I slipped from his grasp. I retrieved his key, unlocked the bedroom door without a sound, and crept downstairs into his study.

I had less than three hours before dawn.

I turned on his computer. I didn't know his password, but I knew Graham’s ego. I tried his daughter's name and birth year: *Millie2018*. Incorrect. I tried his mother's maiden name: *Vance1985*. Incorrect. Then I remembered Sarah’s words: *He wanted complete control.*

I typed: *ArchitectOfDestiny1!*

The desktop loaded.

My hands flew over the trackpad. I opened his cloud storage, navigating through layers of encrypted folders. In a subfolder marked *“Non-Active Corporate Retainers,”* I found them: the original bank statements from six years ago. Shell companies funneled through the Cayman Islands, unauthorized transfers of city infrastructure funds signed by Graham Vance, amounting to over four million dollars.

Right below it was an email thread with Dr. Arthur Mercer dating back six years.

*“Graham: The dosage of Lorazepam and Haldol is sufficient to induce cognitive impairment and speech fragmentation. The court evaluator will find her incapable of testifying in the fraud deposition. My fee remains fifty thousand per quarter.”*

*“Arthur: Ensure she stays heavily sedated during the family court hearing. Once conservatorship is granted, she remains a permanent resident under medical hold. The death record filed with the state vital statistics office has cleared via Julian’s clerk.”*

Proof. Black and white. Documented, premeditated medical kidnapping, fraud, forgery, and false imprisonment.

I plugged a USB flash drive into the port and copied every single file, every email, every financial ledger. My hands were slick with sweat. The progress bar crept forward: 65%... 80%... 100%.

I pulled the drive, tucked it into my bra, and shut down the monitor.

Next, I slipped into Millie’s room. She was sleeping soundly, clutching a stuffed rabbit.

"Millie," I whispered, shaking her shoulder gently. "Millie, wake up."

She rubbed her eyes, blinking in the darkness. "Clara? What's wrong?"

"We're going on an adventure, sweetheart. We're going to get your mommy."

Her eyes widened. "Mommy Sarah?"

"Yes. But you have to be as quiet as a little mouse. Not a sound. Do you understand?"

Millie nodded vigorously, sensing the life-or-death gravity in my voice. I helped her slip into sneakers and a warm jacket, then guided her down the back staircase toward the kitchen.

I took the keys to my Civic from the hook by the door.

Just as my hand touched the brass handle of the back exit, the kitchen lights flooded on with blinding brilliance.

"Going somewhere, Clara?"

May you like

Graham stood in the doorway, blocking the path to the living room. In his right hand, he held a sleek black semi-automatic pistol.
