Chapter 3 - The Dealership Ambush

Eleanor Miller did not believe in closed doors, especially when she believed she held the moral high ground of motherhood. Rebuffed by the loft superintendent, she convinced herself of a different fantasy: Daniel was merely bluffing at the reception to save face, and no real man of his standing would actually withhold a luxury vehicle from his bride’s beloved family.

At ten o’clock that morning, Eleanor arrived at the premier North Shore Mercedes-Maybach dealership, Chloe trailing behind her in oversized sunglasses, designer slides, and an attitude of haughty anticipation. Chloe had her phone propped up on a gimbal, quietly livestreaming to her VIP subscriber tier under the title: *“Securing the keys anyway… toxic family won't stop our bag.”*

"Good morning," Eleanor announced, marching directly to the central sales rotunda with her chin tilted upward, her faux-fur wrap draped dramatically over her shoulders. "I am Eleanor Miller. My daughter, Mia Vance, was gifted a bespoke Mercedes-Maybach S680 yesterday. There was an unfortunate clerical error during the delivery. We are here to finalize the title transfer and collect the secondary set of keys."

The showroom manager, a man named Mr. Henderson, looked up from his desk. Instead of the deferential bowing Eleanor expected, Henderson’s expression was flat, professional, and chillingly unsurprised.

"Mrs. Miller," Henderson said, standing and smoothing his lapels. "We were informed you might visit."

Eleanor gave Chloe a vindicated smirk. "You see, darling? Civility always prevails. Now, I have signed authorization here," Eleanor continued, pulling a crumpled piece of paper from her Birkin knockoff. It was a power-of-attorney form downloaded off the internet, bearing Mia’s forged signature scrawled in blue ballpoint ink. "Sign the transfer over to Chloe Miller. We have a photoshoot at noon."

Henderson didn't even look at the paper. Instead, he gestured subtly toward the glass double doors at the dealership’s entrance. Two uniformed state troopers and a middle-aged man in a tailored three-piece suit walked into the showroom.

"Mrs. Miller," the suit said, stepping forward with a leather portfolio tucked under his arm. "My name is Marcus Vance. I am senior general counsel for the Vance Corporate Group. Mr. Henderson contacted me the moment your vehicle pulled into the private lot."

Eleanor froze, the haughty sneer faltering on her face. "What is this nonsense? This is a private family matter between Mia and her mother!"

"The Maybach you are attempting to fraudulently claim is titled under Vance Global Logistics as a corporate asset allocated exclusively to Mia Vance," Marcus said calmly, his voice ringing through the quiet showroom. "You are presenting a fraudulent document with a forged signature to a commercial enterprise in an attempt to misappropriate property valued at two hundred and eighty thousand dollars. That is grand larceny, Mrs. Miller. And attempting to file false title papers is a class-three felony."

Chloe lowered her gimbal, her face draining of color. "Wait... Marcus, we didn't—Mom, put the paper away!"

"Don't put it away," one of the state troopers commanded, unholstering a pair of zip-ties. "Ma'am, keep your hands where we can see them. Step away from the desk."
