Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Lie

Caleb walked over to the sound system console, unplugged his device, and looked at the terrified guests who were pressed against the far walls like trapped animals. Among them were socialites, hedge-fund managers, and city council members who had applauded Isaac’s cruelty.
“For those of you wondering if this is a private matter,” Caleb said, turning toward the crowd, “I would advise each of you to check your mobile devices.”
Simultaneously, fifty smartphones chimed, buzzed, and pinged in a discordant chorus.
Shrieks and gasps erupted across the room as the guests unlocked their screens. Caleb had mass-transmitted an encrypted dossier to every individual in attendance.
“What is this?!” a prominent real estate mogul gasped, dropping his phone onto a table. “This... this is the entire internal registry of Arthur Vance’s shadow offshore accounts! My firm’s name is on this list!”
“Yes, Councilman Miller,” Caleb smiled warmly. “Your firm took three million in bribes to approve the rezoning of the harbor wetlands. And right below your name is Commissioner Higgins, who accepted a luxury yacht in exchange for overlooking the safety infractions on the Vance Tower.”
Caleb looked at the crowd. “Every journalist from the *Times* to the *Post* has just received the exact same download. In approximately fifteen minutes, the morning editions will go to print. Every single one of you who stood by, sipping champagne while my sister was tortured, will be featured on the front page as co-conspirators in the greatest municipal corruption scandal of the century.”
Panic, pure and unadulterated, seized the ballroom.
Dignified women in couture gowns began shoving each other aside, rushing for the smashed terrace doors in an attempt to flee the cursed estate. Men who had built careers on dignified reputations abandoned their wives, scrambling through the broken glass into the pouring rain, desperate to reach their drivers before the media descended.
Within two minutes, the ballroom was empty of guests.
Only the Sterling brothers, their security team, and the four ruined members of the Vance family remained.
Isaac was still on the floor, his face pressed against the marble beneath Noah’s boot. He could hear the sirens now. Far in the distance, descending the winding mountain road, the high-pitched wails of federal and municipal law enforcement vehicles pierced the rainy night.
“You set me up,” Isaac choked out, spitting blood onto the floor. He glared sideways at me with burning hatred. “You planned this! You spilled that wine on purpose!”
I walked over to where the riding crop lay on the ground. I picked it up. The braided leather was heavy, cold, and stained with my own blood.
“I didn't plan for you to be a monster, Isaac,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I gave you seven years to be a husband. I gave you seven years of my devotion. But three weeks ago, when I found the surveillance footage of you and Clover in our bed, I realized that you didn't want a wife. You wanted a victim.”
I leaned down, the leather crop resting lightly against Isaac’s cheek. He flinched violently, expecting the blow.
I didn't hit him. Striking him would have brought him down to my level, and he was already beneath my feet.

“I didn't need to set you up, Isaac,” I told him softly. “I simply took off the blindfold and let you show the world exactly who you are.”
