Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail Unravels

By Monday morning, the collapse of Ashley and George Vance’s financial house of cards accelerated into a freefall. Arthur Vance called me into his office at eleven o’clock, where Claire had already joined him with three fresh court filings.
"Evelyn, the county prosecutor’s office just executed a search warrant on George Vance’s commercial development office," Arthur announced, a grim satisfaction playing at the corners of his mouth. "They were already investigating him for state procurement fraud, but when we handed over the forged listing agreement and the documentation of the bridge loan, it gave them the probable cause they needed for a comprehensive financial audit."
"What did they find?" Claire asked, leaning forward over the mahogany conference table.
"It’s catastrophic," Arthur said. "George didn't just borrow money on his own home; he had created three shell LLCs that were taking upfront construction deposits from prospective buyers in Whispering Pines and routing the capital directly into an offshore brokerage account to cover his trading losses. Ashley wasn't just a marketing consultant; she was listed as the corporate secretary on two of those shell entities."
My breath caught. "Is she going to prison?"
"George certainly is," Arthur replied without hesitation. "He’s facing multiple counts of grand theft, securities fraud, and felony forgery. As for Ashley, the prosecutor is reviewing her electronic records to determine whether she knowingly participated in the shell scheme or was merely executing her father’s directives. But at a minimum, she is facing felony identity theft charges for forging your signature on the Northfield Residential listing agreement."
"And the Whispering Pines house?" I asked.
"The builder terminated the contract yesterday afternoon due to failure to secure financing," Arthur said. "The three-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar deposit is forfeited. George’s bank has already initiated foreclosure proceedings on his primary residence. By next month, George and Patricia Vance will be completely destitute."
At that moment, the door to the conference room opened, and Daniel walked in, accompanied by his new domestic attorney, a sharp, composed woman named Rachel Sterling. Daniel looked pale, but the indecision that had plagued him for years was gone.
"Mom," Daniel said, taking a seat beside me. "I filed for divorce this morning. Rachel filed an emergency motion for temporary exclusive custody of Lucy and Ben, citing domestic instability and the ongoing criminal investigation into Ashley’s business dealings."
"How did Ashley take it?" Claire asked.
"She didn't take it at all," Daniel said, his voice flat and dead. "She was arrested two hours ago at her father’s office by the county sheriff’s department for questioned involvement in the wire fraud case. Her mother was screaming in the parking lot. I took the kids’ clothes, their birth certificates, and their schoolbooks, and moved them into an extended-stay family suite near my office."
I reached out and took my son’s hand. His fingers were cold, but they squeezed mine with genuine, desperate remorse.
"You don't need to stay in a hotel, Daniel," I said quietly.
May you like
He looked up, tears brimming in his eyes. "Mom... after everything I did... after standing by while she insulted you... I can't ask that of you."
"You aren't asking," I said. "I am telling you. The four bedrooms on Elmwood Avenue were built for family. They were never empty, Daniel; they were just waiting for you to come home."
