Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

It was not the local police. It was Director Vance—no relation to Arthur, but the regional director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by forty heavily armed tactical agents with federal assault weapons leveled.

"Samantha," the Director said, his hands empty, walking slowly toward me. "Stand down. The warrants are executed. Judge Harrington was arrested twenty minutes ago trying to board a private jet at Teterboro. Arthur Vance has signed a full confession to avoid federal obstruction charges. We have the logs, the money trails, the surveillance, and the hit team."

I didn't lower the club. My boot remained on Garrett’s chest.

"He tried to have her ventilator pulled two hours ago, Director," I said without looking at him.

"And he will spend the next fifty years in ADX Florence for attempted murder, federal witness assassination, and civil rights violations resulting in catastrophic bodily injury," Director Vance said, his eyes pleading. "If you kill him now, you go to prison. Chloe wakes up an orphan. And that little girl in the incubator will have no one."

The words hit me harder than any bullet ever could.

*Chloe wakes up an orphan.*

*The little girl in the incubator.*

I looked down at Garrett. He was shaking so hard his teeth were clicking together. His eyes were wide with animal terror, staring up at the club that had beaten his wife.

I slowly took my foot off his chest.

Garrett let out a ragged gasp of relief.

Then, with a short, controlled snap of my wrists, I drove the butt-end of the golf club down into Garrett’s right hand—shattering every metatarsal bone in the fingers he had used to grip that club.

He screamed until his voice gave out, passing out from the agony.

"Arrest them," I said, dropping the club onto his limp body.

Federal agents swarmed the stage. Evelyn Harrington fought like a rabid feral cat as they pinned her to the floor, her emerald dress tearing, her diamond necklace snapping and scattering stones across the blood-slicked hardwood.

"I am a Harrington!" she shrieked, spitting at the agents. "You cannot touch me! My grandfather built this city! You are nothing! You are all paupers!"

They dragged her out in heavy steel chains, her shrieks echoing down the long, historic corridor until the rain swallowed them whole.
