Chapter 3 - The Architect's Ledger

The conference room on the forty-second floor of the Chen & Vance building smelled of old paper, leather-bound statutes, and the cold reality of forensic accounting.

Lucian sat at the head of the mahogany table, flanked by his three senior corporate attorneys. His overcoat hung on the back of his chair; his cuffs were rolled back twice. Across from him sat Marcus Chen, seventy years old, with hair like spun nickel and eyes that had seen three generations of New York power brokers destroy themselves over pride.

Serena was not there.

"Where is she?" Lucian asked. It was the fourth time he had asked in twenty minutes.

"Mrs. Moretti is resting at an undisclosed location under medical supervision," Marcus replied smoothly, opening an accordion file that was bulging with financial statements. "Her recovery from emergency surgery was severely compromised by acute stress. She has no desire to see you, Mr. Moretti, nor is she legally required to."

"She is my wife," Lucian snapped, his composure finally fraying at the edges. "That boy in the NICU is my son. You cannot bar me from the hospital."

"We didn't bar you from the hospital," Marcus said, peering over his gold-rimmed half-glasses. "The Chief of Neonatal Medicine barred you. The infant is currently listed under the mother’s maiden name—Matteo Varga. As the unmarried biological father without an executed acknowledgment of paternity on file, you have no legal standing to demand entry to the restricted isolation unit."

Lucian leaned forward, both palms flat on the wood. "I signed the birth certificate application before I left for Italy."

"An application you failed to execute in the presence of a New York notary," Marcus noted dryly. "Serena did not countersign it. You are legally a stranger to that child until an order of filiation is established by the family court. Which, given the current court backlog, will take approximately nine weeks."

Lucian turned his gaze on his own counsel. "Fix this."

His lead lawyer, Arthur Vance, swallowed hard. He looked down at a thick spreadsheet in front of him. "Lucian... there are other matters that require immediate triage. We received these filings this morning."

"I don't care about the divorce filings. Give her the real estate. Give her the accounts in Zurich. Give her fifty percent of whatever she asks for and get my son’s name changed on that record by tonight."

"You don't understand," Marcus Chen interrupted, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table. "Mrs. Moretti isn't asking for fifty percent of your wealth, Lucian."

Lucian didn't look at the paper. "What does she want? The shipping line?"

"She already owns the shipping line," Marcus said.

The room went dead silent.

Lucian’s eyes flickered to Marcus’s face. "The Moretti Maritime Group is ninety percent held by Moretti Holdings LLC. I am the sole managing member."

"You are the managing member of Moretti Holdings," Marcus agreed, his tone as pleasant as an executioner reading a decree. "However, the operating assets—the thirty-four container vessels, the pier leases at the Port of Newark, the customs broker licenses, and the fuel hedging contracts—are not owned by Moretti Holdings. They are held by an entity called Varga Maritime Capital, incorporated in Delaware seven years ago."

Lucian stopped breathing.

"She created Varga Capital to insulate you from federal racketeering scrutiny during the 2018 port strike," Marcus explained. "You signed the transfer agreements in her hospital room when she had her appendix removed. You didn't read them. You told the notary that whatever Serena drafted was fine because she had the head for numbers."

Marcus smiled faintly. A cold, surgical smile.

"Serena is the sole trustee of Varga Maritime Capital. The trust is irrevocable. Two hours ago, acting in her fiduciary capacity, she terminated the operating lease with Moretti Holdings for breach of covenant—specifically, your failure to disclose material offshore liabilities in Ravello, Italy."

Lucian looked at Arthur Vance.

Vance was staring at the table, his skin the color of wet chalk.

"Is this true?" Lucian whispered.

"We’ve spent the last four hours reviewing the chain of title," Vance said, his voice trembling. "The ports... the ships... even the fuel accounts at Bayonne. They belong to her trust. Lucian, by five o’clock this evening, every crane operating under your name on the eastern seaboard will stop moving. You cannot clear a single container through customs without her electronic signature."

Lucian stood up slowly. The heavy leather chair scraped backward against the hardwood floor with a sound like a gunshot.

"She wouldn't do this," Lucian said, but his voice lacked conviction. He had spent ten years watching Serena systematically dismantle their enemies using tax codes, zoning restrictions, and corporate bylaws while he used men with iron pipes. He had celebrated her mind when it was pointed at his rivals.

He had never imagined what it would feel like to stand in the crosshairs himself.

"She already has," Marcus Chen said. "She left one message for you, Mr. Moretti. Verbatim."

Lucian waited. The room seemed to contract around him until he could hear the faint ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner of the office.

Marcus looked him directly in the eyes.
