Chapter 8 - The Price of Treachery

Forty-eight hours later, the walls closed in on Vanessa.
She had spent two days barricaded inside the Michigan Avenue loft that Daniel had purchased with embezzled funds, ignoring summons from the state attorney’s investigators. But when the building’s management was served with an eviction order stemming from the corporate asset seizure, she was forced out into the blinding light of reality.
Julian and I watched the muted local news broadcast from the comfort of my recovery room. Maya was sleeping peacefully in my arms, having graduated out of the intensive care unit into my room for kangaroo care. Her soft, rhythmic breathing against my chest was an impenetrable shield against the chaos outside.
On the screen, a banner flashed: **LOCAL DEVELOPER SCANDAL: ASSOCIATE ARRESTED IN LUXURY CONDO EMBEZZLEMENT.**
The footage showed Vanessa, her head ducked low, her wrists bound in steel cuffs behind her back, being escorted down the steps of the high-rise by two female plainclothes detectives. Photographers swarmed the curb, flashes illuminating her tear-streaked, humiliated face.
She had attempted to flee to her ex-husband’s home in Indiana, only to find that her bank cards had been declined and her luxury lease vehicle had been reported stolen by the receiver managing Pierce Development’s estate. When she turned to Daniel for legal bail assistance, his answering service informed her that Mr. Pierce had revoked her indemnity status, effectively abandoning her to face charges of grand larceny, corporate forgery, and conspiracy to commit fraud entirely on her own.
"She thought she was his queen," Julian murmured, adjusting the blanket around Maya’s tiny bare feet. "She was never anything more than his disposable signature machine."
"Do you feel sorry for her?" Leo asked from the doorway, holding a tray of fresh fruit he had brought from the hotel.
I looked down at the tiny girl resting on my collarbone. I remembered the sensation of Vanessa’s hands shoving me against that cold hospital wall, the utter absence of remorse in her eyes when she saw me clutching my stomach in agony.
"I spent my entire adult life trying to save Vanessa from her own greed," I said softly. "I paid her debts, shielded her from consequences, and offered her unconditional love. But she didn't want my love, Leo. She wanted my life. Now she has to live with the life she chose."
My phone chimed with an encrypted email from Marcus. Attached was a scanned copy of Daniel Pierce’s emergency response to the divorce summons.
Having realized that charm and gaslighting were useless against the Bennett legal fortress, Daniel had resorted to brute financial desperation. He had called an emergency press conference and shareholder assembly for 3:00 p.m. at the Palmer House Hilton, intending to announce a restructuring plan backed by an offshore sovereign fund—a desperate, fabricated illusion designed to bluff his creditors into granting him a ninety-day extension.
"He’s giving a speech at the Palmer House?" I asked, looking up at Marcus as he strode into the room.
Marcus checked his gold wristwatch. It was 1:45 p.m.
"He thinks he can lie his way through one last room of investors," Marcus said, a predatory glint in his grey eyes. "He assumes that because you're recovering in a hospital bed, the Bennett family will fight him strictly through delayed legal filings and courtroom motions."
I looked at my brothers. Marcus, the brilliant strategist. Julian, the healer who had shielded my child’s life. Leo, the warrior who guarded our sanctuary.
For seven years, I had hidden from their strength because a small, cowardly man had convinced me that strength was dangerous.
"Julian," I said, looking up at my brother. "Can you look after Maya for two hours with the pediatric nurse?"
Julian smiled slowly. "With my life. Why?"
I handed Maya gently into his arms, then swung my legs over the side of the hospital bed, planting my bare feet firmly on the ground.

"Leo," I said, meeting my youngest brother’s fierce gaze. "Go fetch my clothes from the suite. Marcus, call your driver. It’s time I attended my husband’s final meeting."
