Chapter 7 - Margaret’s Ruin

By five o'clock that evening, the social shockwave had decimated Margaret Sterling’s carefully constructed world.
It started at the Belle Haven Country Club. Margaret had driven straight there from the River Road estate, desperate to find an audience to rally support and paint me as an unhinged, power-mad military lunatic who had ambushed her family.
Instead, she was met at the front doors by the club’s general manager.
"Mrs. Sterling," the manager said politely, blocking her entry to the main dining room. "I’m afraid your membership card has been flagged."
Margaret bristled, clutching her designer handbag like a shield. "Flagged? Do you know who I am? My husband was on the board of trustees!"
"Was, ma'am," the manager said, maintaining a practiced, unyielding smile. "The Sterling corporate account, which pays for your family’s premier membership, was underwritten by Ironclad Logistics. We received a formal corporate revocation notice from Vance Legal at noon today. Furthermore, the club president received a call from Senator Montgomery’s office regarding an incident at your residence this morning."
The women sitting on the veranda—women Margaret had spent thirty years competing with, gossiping with, and lording her supposed wealth over—were all watching through the glass. Some were whispering behind menus; others were taking photos with their phones.
"This is an outrage!" Margaret hissed. "My son is a visionary! That woman is a nobody!"
"That woman," the manager replied, dropping the professional warmth entirely, "is a decorated senior officer of the United States Army who happens to own the deed to the land this clubhouse sits on. I would suggest you leave before security is required to assist you."
Margaret stumbled backward onto the cobblestone drive. Her phone chimed repeatedly.
Text from Arthur: *The bank pulled the second mortgage on our Charlottesville home. Ethan's debt is defaulting back to us. Where are you?*
Text from her daughter, Chloe: *Mom, what did Ethan do?! My tuition at Georgetown was just canceled by the trust!*

Margaret stood alone in the afternoon sun, the golden life she had built on Ethan’s false bravado and my quiet money crumbling into dust around her designer heels.
