Chapter 4 - The Cell and the Silk

In the basement holding cells of the federal courthouse, the world was painted in municipal cinderblock and cold iron.

Julian Vance sat on a metal bench, his two-thousand-dollar Italian wool trousers stained with gray dust from the precinct floor. His silk tie was gone, confiscated alongside his belt and his gold Rolex. His face was white, his eyes wild with a mixture of rage and burgeoning panic.

Across from him, behind the heavy wire-reinforced glass of the interview partition, Arthur Vance paced like a caged tiger. The older man’s silver hair was disheveled, his collar open, revealing the sagging skin of his neck.

"Shut your mouth, Julian!" Arthur snarled, his voice a hoarse whisper. "Don't say another word until Caldwell arrives. Our attorneys will have this thrown out before midnight. The federal magistrate is a personal friend of mine. I funded his judicial campaign!"

The heavy steel door at the end of the corridor buzzed open. An older man in a charcoal suit walked in, carrying a thin leather briefcase. It was Richard Caldwell, senior partner at Caldwell, Vance & Sterling—the legal titan that had defended the family empire for three decades.

Julian sprang to his feet, gripping the mesh partition. "Richard! Thank God. Get us out of here. These animals put me in handcuffs! They searched my pockets! Clara had some kind of hysterical breakdown at the party, she fell, and these federal thugs stormed the house without cause!"

Caldwell did not open his briefcase. He did not smile. He looked at Arthur, then at Julian, with eyes that were hollow and exhausted.

"Sit down, Julian," the lawyer said quietly.

"What do you mean, sit down?" Arthur barked. "Have you posted the bail bond? The clerk said we couldn't be arraigned until tomorrow morning, but you can get an emergency habeas corpus writ before Judge Miller!"

"Judge Miller recused himself two hours ago, Arthur," Caldwell said, his voice flat. "And there will be no bail."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

"What are you talking about?" Julian whispered.

"The Department of Justice filed a sealed indictment under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act," Caldwell explained, pulling a single sheet of paper from his pocket and unfolding it against the glass. "It isn't just an audit. They have twelve hundred gigabytes of internal server records, banking communications, wiretap recordings of your meetings with the state transit commission, and complete transaction logs from the Cayman accounts."

Arthur shook his head violently. "Impossible. Those files were kept on an air-gapped system in my private safe! No one had the access key except me and—"

Arthur stopped. His mouth remained slightly open, his breath hitching in his chest.

"Clara," Julian spat, the name tasting like poison. "It was her. That little bitch was copying your files?"

"The United States Attorney has named Clara as their primary cooperating witness," Caldwell said. "Furthermore, under the mandatory provisions of the federal seizure laws, every single asset belonging to Vance Enterprises, its subsidiaries, and your personal family trusts has been placed under a preliminary freeze order. Your credit cards do not work. Your corporate accounts are impounded. Even the retainer account your father kept with my firm was frozen forty-five minutes ago."

Julian stared at his attorney in horrified disbelief. "What about Chloe? She’s waiting at the house—"

"Chloe is currently in Interview Room 4," Caldwell interrupted with a grimace. "She was stopped trying to leave the estate with two duffel bags filled with your mother’s diamond necklaces and forty thousand dollars in emergency cash from your master bedroom safe. The agents took her into custody for possession of stolen property and conspiracy."

"No," Julian groaned, sinking back onto the cold metal bench, his hands clutching his head. "No, this is a mistake. She’s pregnant with my child! She’s carrying my heir!"

Caldwell looked at the younger man with profound pity and disgust. "The agents ran her background check two hours ago, Julian. Chloe isn't twenty-two, she's twenty-eight. Her real name is Chloe Jenkins. She was arrested three years ago in Nevada for identity theft and wire fraud. She isn't pregnant. The medical staff at the intake center tested her blood upon booking. The pregnancy test was completely negative."

Julian froze. He slowly lifted his head, his face an empty canvas of utter humiliation and ruin.

"She lied to you, Julian," Caldwell said softly. "And while you were parading her through your home to humiliate your wife, your wife was signing the paperwork that handed your entire existence over to the federal government."
