Chapter 7 - The Eviction of the King

Monday morning arrived crisp and clear.

At 9:00 AM, three Franklin County Sheriff’s cruisers pulled up to the curb outside the glass-and-limestone facade of the Hale Crest Construction building on Front Street. A locksmith’s van parked directly behind them.

I sat in the back of Claire’s town car across the street, Maya strapped securely in the car seat beside me, her small hand clutching the edge of her fleece blanket. I wanted to be there. I needed to see it with my own eyes.

Employees were already pouring out of the glass double doors, carrying cardboard bankers' boxes filled with desk plants, monitors, and personal effects. Word had spread through the local business community like wildfire over the weekend: Hale Crest was under federal investigation, the state transit contract had been suspended, and the building had been seized by Daniel Mercer’s estate.

At 9:30, Richard’s black Mercedes pulled aggressively onto the sidewalk apron.

He leaped out of the car without shutting the door, Kelsey running behind him in four-inch heels, clutching her designer purse like a life raft.

“Halt!” Richard screamed, charging toward the revolving doors where two uniformed deputies stood with crossed arms. “Stop this immediately! I have an emergency injunction pending in the appellate court!”

Deputy Miller—the same officer who had secured him on my front porch—stepped forward, holding a yellow slip of paper with a raised county seal.

“Mr. Hale, the Tenth District Court of Appeals denied your emergency stay forty minutes ago,” Miller said, her voice loud enough to carry across the crowded plaza where dozens of his former employees were watching in silence. “Writ of possession has been executed. The premises have been returned to Mercer Asset Management. You have thirty minutes to remove your personal effects under our direct supervision. Corporate records, servers, and financial documents remain under federal seal.”

“This is my life!” Richard bellowed, his voice cracking into a ragged scream. “I built this company from nothing! Daniel was nothing until he married my daughter! He was an orphan with a tool belt!”

“Daniel was a man of honor,” Claire’s voice rang out as she stepped out of our car, her long camel coat sweeping behind her as she crossed the street. “Something you haven't been in forty years, Richard.”

The employees turned to look at Claire. Several of the older project managers—men who had known Daniel for years—nodded slowly, stepping aside to let her pass.

Kelsey suddenly lunged toward Claire, her face twisted in rage. “You ruined us! You ugly, dried-up old b-tch, you ruined our lives!”

Before she could take two steps, Deputy Miller caught Kelsey by the shoulder, spun her around, and slammed her against the hood of Richard’s Mercedes with enough force to bounce the suspension.

“Hands on the hood!” Miller commanded. “You were warned in court on Saturday, Mrs. Hale. You’re under arrest for disorderly conduct and attempted assault.”

“Richard!” Kelsey shrieked, her cheek pressed flat against the cold, black paint of the luxury car. “Richard, help me! Do something!”

Richard didn't move. He stood on the sidewalk, his shoulders hunched, his hands dangling uselessly at his sides. For the first time in his life, his money couldn't buy a judge. His connections couldn't silence the police. His intimidation couldn't break the woman he had tried to step on.

He looked across the street.

Through the tinted glass of the town car, his eyes met mine.

I rolled the window down two inches. Just enough for him to see my face. Just enough for him to see Maya sleeping peacefully against my shoulder.

I didn't yell. I didn't mock him. I simply lifted Daniel’s gold wedding band, which hung around my neck on a thin silver chain, and let it catch the morning sun.

Richard’s knees seemed to buckle. He looked away, turning his back as the locksmith drilled out the heavy brass cylinders of his office doors and replaced them with hardened steel deadbolts that he would never possess a key to again.
