Chapter 7 - Face to Face with the Sovereigns

"Here is the settlement," Elara said, signaling to Henrik.

Henrik stepped forward, holding two thin sheets of parchment stamped with the imperial wax seal of the Devereux family. He tossed them onto the floor in front of Marcus.

Marcus crawled forward on his knees, his bound fingers trembling as he smoothed out the paper.

"This... this is an asset forfeiture agreement," Marcus stammered, reading the lines through blurred vision. "You're taking everything. The patents. The fund management rights. The family name... you’re taking the name *Vance Capital*?!"

"The name Vance Capital is associated with our private liquidity," Christian Devereux said from the council table. "It will be liquidated. Every contract you ever signed will be voided for fraud. Your investors will be repaid in full by our trust—and in exchange, they will sign non-disclosure agreements barring them from ever speaking your name in polite society again."

"And me?" Marcus whispered, looking up at Elara, his voice trembling like a dying man's. "What happens to me?"

"You leave this building with exactly what you brought into my life," Elara answered.

Marcus blinked. "Fifty thousand dollars?"

A low, collective chuckle rippled through the Devereux council.

Genevieve leaned forward, her gray eyes narrowing to slits. "Fifty thousand dollars? Boy, when my granddaughter met you in SoHo, you had twenty-two thousand dollars in student debt and an overdue electric bill on a rented studio apartment in Queens. You owned three off-the-rack suits and a twelve-year-old sedan with a broken transmission."

The matriarch stood up, supported by her cane, her presence towering over the room despite her age.

"You will be stripped of every credential. Your degree from Harvard? Our family endowed the chair of their economics department sixty years ago; an academic inquiry into your admissions portfolio has already begun. Your broker's license? Revoked by emergency decree of the NASD. You are persona non grata in every financial center on Earth."

"You can't do that!" Chloe suddenly screamed, her panic breaking into hysteria. "This is America! You can't just erase people!"

Lucas Devereux, Elara's second brother, smiled coldly. "Miss Sterling, your family’s shipping empire was dissolved at sunrise. Your father is currently being questioned by the coast guard regarding five unregistered cargo containers off the coast of Maine. As for you..."

Lucas nodded to Henrik.

Two female security officers stepped forward, flanking Chloe.

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate the state of New York," Lucas told her. "Your trust fund has been attached to your father’s bankruptcy proceedings. If you ever attempt to contact Marcus, Elara, or any member of this family again, the remaining debt will be transferred directly to your name. You will spend the rest of your life paying off the port fees your father owed in Antwerp."

Chloe collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands. The guards lifted her by her arms and dragged her toward the elevators, her heels scraping uselessly against the stone.

The hall fell silent again, save for the sound of Marcus’s ragged breathing.

"Elara," Marcus whispered, dragging himself closer until his forehead touched the toe of her shoe. "Please. I beg you. Have mercy on me. I was a fool. I was blind. Just let me have an entry-level analyst job somewhere. Let me work! Don't destroy my life!"

Elara pulled her foot back, refusing to let him touch her.

"You told me last night that comfort was the enemy of greatness, Marcus," she said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, terrible certainty. "I am giving you the greatest gift a man like you could ever ask for."

She looked down at him with eyes as cold as deep space.

May you like

"I am taking away your comfort forever."
