Chapter 7 - Counter-Offensive

At dawn, the sun broke over Fort Liberty, painting the long pine forests of North Carolina in shades of amber and gold.
At Womack Army Medical Center, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the predatory tension of Charlotte Memorial. Here, Abigail lay in a private VIP suite within the secure military wing. Outside her door stood two decorated paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division, their boots polished to a mirror sheen, sidearms holstered.
Abigail was sleeping peacefully for the first time in two years, her bruised face resting against clean, crisp hospital sheets. The monitors showed a steady, rhythmic pulse. The threat had been physically severed.
Downstairs in the base headquarters auditorium, Rachel Gardner stood in front of a mirror, adjusting the collar of her dress uniform. General Mercer entered, carrying a cup of black coffee which he handed to her.
“The media circus has begun,” Mercer said.
Rachel took a sip. “What are they saying?”
“Charles Ferguson’s PR firm tried to launch a blitz at 5:00 AM,” Mercer replied. “They pushed articles to several local outlets claiming Preston was falsely arrested due to military overreach, and that Abigail was suffering from severe psychiatric episodes. They even claimed you used military assets to kidnap your daughter from a civilian hospital.”
Rachel didn't flinch. “And the response?”
“The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina is holding a joint press conference with the Department of Justice and the FBI in Raleigh in twenty minutes. They are unsealing a forty-two-count indictment against Charles Ferguson, Preston Ferguson, and seven executives of Ferguson Development Group.”
Mercer pulled out a remote control and turned on the wall-mounted television.
The screen showed the exterior of the federal courthouse in Raleigh. Microphones from CNN, Fox News, CBS, and every local affiliate were clustered on the podium. The U.S. Attorney, a formidable woman named Sarah Jenkins, stepped to the microphones alongside Special Agent Vance.
“Good morning,” Jenkins began, her voice crisp and authoritative. “Earlier today, federal law enforcement officers executed arrest warrants and search warrants across North Carolina, dismantling a vast, multi-million-dollar criminal enterprise operated by Ferguson Development Group.”
The camera flashed rapidly as Jenkins continued.
“The indictment charges Charles Ferguson III and his son, Preston Ferguson, with federal racketeering, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States military, and willful structural sabotage of defense infrastructure. Furthermore, Preston Ferguson faces federal civil rights violations and state-level charges of attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery against his wife, Abigail Gardner.”
Jenkins looked directly into the cameras.
“Let this serve as a message to those who believe that wealth, family lineage, and political influence place them above the rule of law. You cannot bribe the United States military. You cannot purchase immunity from justice. And you cannot brutalize a citizen of this country and hide behind your bank accounts.”
Rachel watched the broadcast, feeling a profound, settling calm wash over her chest. The Ferguson name, built over three generations of political intimidation and ruthless greed, was being systematically dismantled on live international television.
“Rachel,” Mercer said quietly. “There’s one more thing.”
“What is it, David?”
“Charles Ferguson tried to make bail an hour ago. The federal judge revoked it immediately upon reviewing the evidence of witness tampering and threats made against you and your daughter at the hospital. He is being transferred to the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner. He won’t see the light of day before his trial.”
Rachel looked at her reflection in the glass. The rage that had carried her through the seventy-mile drive from Fort Liberty to Charlotte had burned down into cool, unshakeable bedrock.

“Let’s go check on Abby,” Rachel said.
