Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF LOYALTY

The elimination of Dante shattered the delicate peace of New York’s criminal underworld.

The Valenti family, realizing their inside man was dead and their conspiracy exposed, launched a desperate, scorched-earth retaliation. Over the next forty-eight hours, three of Moretti’s shipping warehouses were firebombed, and two supply convoys in New Jersey were ambushed.

The penthouse was placed on complete lockdown. Steel blast shutters slid down over the panoramic glass windows, sealing the luxury fortress into a shadowy bunker illuminated only by emergency track lighting. Armed sentries patrolled every hallway, their heavy boots a constant, rhythmic reminder of impending war.

Elena stayed confined to the master suite with Mia. The luxury of the high-rise had vanished, replaced by the claustrophobic dread of a siege.

Mia was restless, picking up on the suffocating tension in the air. She refused to eat, crying intermittently and clinging to Elena’s shirt.

Around 2:00 a.m. on the third night of the lockdown, the power cut out.

The hum of the industrial air filtration system died. The ambient golden lights flickered and vanished, plunging the entire floor into pitch-black darkness.

Elena sat bolt upright in bed, clutching Mia to her chest. "Lorenzo?" she called out into the shadows.

A second later, the sharp, deafening sound of suppressed gunfire erupted from the elevator vestibule down the hall.

*Pfft-pfft-pfft.*

Shouts echoed through the dark corridor, followed by the heavy thump of bodies hitting the floor.

Elena’s blood ran cold. *They’re inside.*

She scrambled out of bed, grabbing the heavy wool blanket to wrap around Mia. Her foster-care survival instincts took over instantly: no lights, stay low, find a fortified corner. She backed into the deep walk-in closet, sliding behind a row of heavy winter coats and holding her hand over Mia’s mouth to muffle her frightened whimpers.

The heavy suite doors kicked open with a thunderous bang.

Heavy footsteps entered the bedroom. Through the slats of the closet door, Elena saw the sweep of high-powered tactical flashlights cutting through the dust.

"Check the nursery!" a voice hissed in heavily accented English. "The Don is pinned down at the private garage! The kid is up here!"

"Find the girl! Don Valenti wants her head in a cooler!"

Two armed men in tactical gear stepped into the bedroom, their flashlights darting across the empty bed.

Inside the closet, Mia let out a tiny, stifled sneeze.

The flashlights froze. Both beams snapped directly onto the closet door.

"In here," one of the men whispered, raising his suppressed submachine gun.

Elena knew she had three seconds to live. She looked down at Mia. If they opened fire through the wood, the spray of bullets would tear the infant apart.

With a sudden, primal fury she didn't know she possessed, Elena didn't cower.

She grabbed a heavy, solid-brass decorative valet stand standing beside her in the closet, kicked the louvred doors wide open, and charged forward with a deafening scream.

The sudden burst of violence caught the lead gunman completely off guard. Elena slammed the heavy brass base directly into the man’s face with all the strength in her body.

The metal crushed his nose with a wet crunch. The gunman screamed, dropping his weapon and stumbling backward.

The second gunman cursed, raising his rifle to fire at Elena point-blank.

*BANG.*

The gunshot wasn't suppressed. It was the deafening, bone-shattering roar of a .44 Magnum.

The second gunman’s chest caved inward, his body thrown backward across the bedroom like a ragdoll, crashing through a glass coffee table.

Lorenzo stood in the shattered doorway of the master suite.

He was covered in blood—none of it his own. His shirt was torn, his eyes blazing with a feral, terrifying madness. In his hand, the heavy steel revolver smoked in the dim emergency light.

The first gunman, clutching his broken face on the floor, frantically reached for his fallen weapon.

Lorenzo closed the distance in two strides. He stepped down hard on the man’s wrist, shattering the bones, and leveled the barrel of the magnum directly between his eyes.

"Wait," Elena gasped, clutching Mia behind her, trembling from head to toe. "Mia... don't do it in front of her!"

Lorenzo paused. For a fraction of a second, the bloodlust in his eyes warred with something deeper.

He didn't pull the trigger. Instead, he brought the heavy steel butt of the revolver down against the gunman’s temple, knocking him into instant unconsciousness.

Marco and three more Moretti soldiers rushed into the room, their weapons raised.

"Vestibule is clear, Boss! The breach team is eliminated!" Marco shouted through the smoke.

Lorenzo holstered his weapon. He turned toward Elena.

She stood in the center of the ruined room, clutching the baby with one arm, the brass valet stand still raised like a weapon in the other, her breathing ragged, her eyes wide with terror and adrenaline.

Lorenzo crossed the room and gently took the brass stand from her shaking fingers, tossing it aside.

Then, before the eyes of his men, before the shattered remnants of his fortified empire, the most feared mafia boss in New York pulled Elena Vance and his daughter into his arms, burying his face into the curve of Elena’s neck.

He was trembling.

"You're safe," Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he had buried for a decade. "I swear to God, you're safe now."

May you like

Elena’s strength finally shattered. The brass stand clattered to the floor, and she buried her face into Lorenzo’s broad chest, weeping openly as his powerful arms locked around them both, shielding them from the world.
