Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Vault

The staircase led down into a network of pre-Civil War storage tunnels originally built for river freight. Water dripped from the arched brick ceilings, pooling around Damian's boots. Battery-powered LED strips lined the corridor, flickering weakly, proving that someone had maintained this tomb until very recently.
Fifty yards into the tunnel, the corridor opened into a reinforced bunker.
Damian stepped inside, his flashlight beam cutting through the shadows. The room was sparse: an iron cot, stacks of dog-eared paperback books, a shortwave radio, and a desk covered in charcoal sketches. But the cot was empty. The blankets were tossed aside, and on the floor lay a shattered plastic IV stand and dark stains that had not yet fully dried.
"Blood," Luca muttered, shining his light near the far threshold. "Recent. Twelve hours at most."
On the desk sat a wooden carving of a rabbit, identical in shape to the plush toy Mia had carried. Next to it lay an open ledger.
Damian walked over to the desk, his heart hammering against his ribs. The handwriting in the ledger belonged entirely to his father. The final entry was dated three days prior:
*Corrado knows the heart medication is failing. He brought his nephew Marco yesterday. They don't know that Clara's child can slip through the drainage conduit. Mia is smart. She knows the route to the garden. If I don't survive tonight, my boy will finish this.*
"Clara," Damian whispered aloud.
Luca looked up. "Who is Clara?"
Corrado, shoved into the room by Luca’s men, laughed bitterly from the doorway. "Your half-sister, Damian. Anthony took a mistress after your mother died. Clara was born in secret. She died of fever two years ago in this very hole, leaving the brat behind. Anthony raised the girl in the dark."
Damian turned slowly, the barrel of his gun coming up to align perfectly with the bridge of Corrado’s nose. "Where is he, Corrado? Where is my father?"
May you like
Corrado's smile vanished. "He’s gone, Damian. Marco moved him to the north warehouse at dusk. If you kill me, you'll never find the body."
