Chapter 10 - Secured

Deacon swept the room with calm, methodical precision. He caught Richard Sterling by the wrist as the older man reached for the antique landline telephone on the sideboard.

"I wouldn't do that, sir," Deacon said calmly, twisting Richard’s wrist with just enough torque to force the patriarch to his knees with a sharp cry of pain. "Interfering with an emergency medical extraction is a federal offense when biometrics confirm aggravated assault."

Marcus had already forgotten about Trent. He was on his knees beside Clara, his massive hands gentling into feather-light touches as he cradled her head and shoulders.

"Clara," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with the emotional strain he had held back for three hundred miles. "Lily. Look at me."

Clara opened her swollen eyes. When she saw the familiar green eyes of her older brother, the terrifying wall of terror she had lived behind for eight months finally shattered. A broken sob tore out of her throat, and she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his tactical vest.

"Marcus... you came... you actually came..." she wept, her body shaking uncontrollably.

"I told you I would," Marcus said, gently kissing the top of her bruised forehead. "I've got you. Nobody in this house will ever lay a hand on you again. I swear it on our mother's grave."

He quickly ran his hands along her arms and checked her pulse. "How is the baby? Are you cramping?"

"A little," she cried softly. "He slapped me, Marcus. He said he was going to take the baby away from me..."

Marcus’s eyes flicked over to where Trent was still lying on the floor, clutching his stomach and groaning. Marcus rose slowly to his feet, stepping over Trent's trembling legs as he walked toward Helen, who was frozen against the sideboard, clutching her pearls with trembling hands.

"You cheered," Marcus said to the older woman.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about!" Helen stammered, pressing her back against the wall. "You're a savage! You're going to prison for the rest of your life!"

"I know what happened in this room," Marcus said, pointing at the shattered phone and the bruised mark on Clara’s cheek. "You three are going to watch every dime you own disappear into the legal system. But right now, we are leaving."

Marcus walked back, bent down, and scooped Clara into his arms, supporting her weight effortlessly as if she were a child.

"Deacon, package the scene," Marcus ordered. "Take the broken phone, take the girl’s recording device on the counter, and let's roll."

"Got it," Deacon said, bagging Nicole's phone from the counter where it had still been actively transmitting the entire horrific incident.
