Chapter 2 - The Paper Fortress

Officer Miller and Officer Davis arrived in less than three minutes. Their cruiser rolled silently up the gravel driveway, red and blue lights flashing without the siren.
Through the sidelight window, I watched Lorraine’s transformation. The instant the cruiser’s doors opened, her manic pounding stopped. She collapsed against the railing, clutching her throat, adopting the posture of an elderly dowager who had barely survived a home invasion.
"Officers! Thank God!" Lorraine cried, her voice carrying through the door. "My son is trapped inside with a hysterical woman! She’s locked us out! She’s vandalized the home!"
Ryan stood by the deadbolt, looking between the window and me, his chest heaving. "Audrey, unlock it now. We can tell them it was a misunderstanding. I swear to God, if you embarrass my family in front of the local precinct, you will regret it."
"Open it yourself, Ryan," I said calmly. "Oh, wait. You can't."
I descended the final stairs, walked past him, and used the digital keypad concealed behind the brass doorbell housing. I entered a six-digit code. The electronic deadbolt disengaged with a solid, hydraulic *thunk*.
I pulled the heavy door open.
The brisk autumn air swept into the foyer, smelling of damp leaves and exhaust fumes. Lorraine immediately tried to shove past me, her eyes flashing with triumphant venom.
"Get out of my way, you pathetic—"
"Ma'am, please step back," Officer Miller barked. He was a veteran cop with graying hair and a clipboard tucked under his arm. He didn't look impressed by Lorraine’s houndstooth coat or her diamond rings. "Keep your hands where we can see them. Step back onto the driveway."
"Do you know who I am?" Lorraine shrieked, gesturing wildly. "This is my son's house! Ryan Sterling! His father was on the hospital board! We built this town!"
"Officer, there’s no need for this," Ryan interjected, stepping out onto the porch in his bare feet, flashing his most charming, corporate smile. "I’m Ryan Sterling. This is my home. My wife here is having a severe manic episode. She changed the locks overnight without my consent and refused to let my mother in for breakfast. I apologize for the inconvenience. We have the situation under control."
Officer Davis, the younger patrolman, looked at Audrey, then at Ryan, then down at his dispatch tablet. "We received a call for an active trespasser from the property owner."
"That would be me," Ryan said smoothly, extending a hand. "I’ll handle my mother. Audrey, go back inside."
"Officer Miller," I interrupted, stepping forward so both officers could clearly see the ripped front of my dress and the faint red scratches on my collarbone from Lorraine's manicured nails. "I am Audrey Vance. I am the sole owner of 14 Meadowood Lane."
Lorraine let out a braying laugh. "You hear that? She’s delusional! Ryan bought this house! He pays the mortgage! He pays the property taxes! He pays for every stitch of clothing on her back!"
"Officer Davis, if you would check the county cadastre database on your terminal," I said, ignoring Lorraine entirely. "Parcel ID 409-88-A. You will find that the deed is held solely under the Audrey Vance Revocable Living Trust. It was purchased outright, in cash, four years ago. There is no mortgage. Mr. Sterling’s name does not appear on the title, the deed, or the property tax receipts."
Ryan’s patronizing smile faltered. His brow twitched. "Audrey, stop playing games. The trust was set up for tax sheltering for *my* earnings. That’s what we agreed with the accountants."
"You never read the paperwork, Ryan," I said, looking at him with utter pity. "You signed a waiver of marital interest in this property as a condition of your corporate debt consolidation three weeks before we married. Your attorney, whom I paid for, advised you to do so to shield this property from your creditors."
Officer Davis tapped his screen. He looked up, his expression hardening as he glanced at Ryan. "She’s right. Property is registered exclusively to Audrey Vance, Trustee. Mr. Sterling is listed as an occupant, not an owner."
Lorraine turned on her son, her face turning the color of an overripe plum. "Ryan? What is this idiot talking about? What did you sign?"
"Nothing! It's a mistake! Davis, check it again!" Ryan's voice cracked.
"Ma'am," Officer Miller turned to Lorraine. "You are not a resident here. The owner has explicitly stated you do not have permission to be on the premises. You need to return to your vehicle and vacate the property immediately."
"I will not!" Lorraine screamed, lunging toward the threshold. "My son lives here! My son pays for everything! You arrest her! Look at her, she’s an unhinged, gold-digging whore who—"
Officer Miller stepped between Lorraine and the door, his hand resting firmly on his duty belt. "Ma'am, step back *now*. If you take one more step toward this doorway or continue screaming, I will place you under arrest for criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace."
"Ryan!" she wailed, clutching at his arm. "Do something! Assert yourself! Tell them!"
Ryan looked at the officers. He looked at the neighbors across the cul-de-sac, who were already parting their sheer curtains to watch the spectacle. Then he looked at me. His handsome, polished facade had completely disintegrated, replaced by a raw, naked panic.
"Audrey... please," he choked out, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "Don't do this to Mom. Let her come in. We can talk about this inside."
"Lorraine leaves now," I said clearly, loud enough for both officers to hear. "And Ryan? You have twenty minutes to put on shoes, pack a single suitcase, and leave with her. If you are not off my property by eight o'clock, I will have the officers remove you for domestic harassment."
"You can't kick me out of my own home!" Ryan snarled, dropping the polite act entirely, his fists clenching at his sides. "I am your husband!"
"This is not our home, Ryan," I replied, stepping back into the marble foyer. "This is *my* house. And your tenancy is officially terminated."

I pulled the heavy mahogany door shut and let the lock click into place.
